Absegami Looks to Gain Experience in 2021

The Absegami High School boys basketball team will feature a lot of new faces in 2021.

The Braves will be directed by first-year head coach John Arcidiacono. Only two lettermen — seniors Dai’shawn Hathaway and Javon Brown — return to Galloway Township this winter.

Hathaway tallied a career-high nine points in a 55-40 loss to Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District rival Cedar Creek last February.

Absegami’s lengthy list of newcomers includes Darshan Surti, JJ Pawlowski, Baseem Taliaferro and Charles Jerkins. Transfer Hassan Bey and newcomers Ra’meer Pender, Isiah Akpassa, Manny Torres, Kenny Van Houten and Keyshaun Brown complete the Braves’ roster.

Absegami went 2-7 last season and recorded wins over Atlantic Tech and Pleasantville. The Braves struggled to develop a rhythm on offense and were held to less than 30 points in three different contests. Ramar Cook, Absegami’s only anticipated returning starter, scored 17 points in the win over the Red Hawks. However, Cook transferred to Cedar Creek in the offseason.

This season, the objective will be to exhibit a sense of competitiveness and gain experience through each battle.

“With eight graduated seniors and the only varsity starter returner transferring, we will look to try and compete in some games and gain some experience for our new players,” Arcidiacono said.
